IMMACULATA, Pa. - Despite the Mighty Macs' rally in singles action, Keystone College was able to sneak past Immaculata University, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match.
Imaculata (1-10, 1-5 CSAC) trailed, 2-1, after doubles play. The Mighty Macs' second doubles pair of
Demetrios Vlahos and
Eric Schmidt were 8-6 winners against Sean Hanahue and Robert Gilroy.
The first four singles matches to conclude resulted in a 4-3 advantage for the Giants (3-7, 2-4 CSAC) with the final two matches heading into a decisive third set. Immaculata picked up its second and third point of the match as Schmidt downed Gilroy, 6-3, 6-4, at the fourth position, and
Mike Tyrell was a 6-1, 6-1 winner opposite Keith Garubba in the fifth spot.
Immaculata's Mike Pancoast and Vlahos were the final two singles matches left on the court with the outcome resting on the results from their matches. Vlahos, playing at No. 3, lost his opening set to Hanahue in a tie-breaker (7-6), however came back to win the second set, 6-4, and captured the win at third singles with a 6-4 third-set victory. Pancoast, who lost the first set (6-4) to Matthew Gentile at No. 6, won the second set by the same margin. Pancoast eventually dropped the third set, 6-1.
Immaculata plays its final match at home this season on Tuesday, hosting Lancaster Bible at 4 p.m.
