Cunningham’s Header Advances Immaculata To Semifinals, 1-0

Box Score

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.Bridget Cunningham headed in a cross from Robin Valerio with 1:04 left in the game to lift fifth-seeded Immaculata to a 1-0 upset over fourth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on a frigid Monday evening at the GMC athletic complex.

With the win, Immaculata (8-10-1) advances to the CSAC semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at top-seed and regular-season champion Cabrini. Game time for that semifinal is 6 p.m. The historic victory marks the first time that the Mighty Macs have advanced to the conference semifinals. Gwynedd-Mercy closes out its season at 9-10-1 overall.

Valerio made a long run down the far sideline with just under two minutes left when she crossed the ball in front of the net. Cunningham went up in the air to challenge Gwynedd-Mercy goalkeeper Kristie Pollock for the cross and flicked the ball into an empty net from about the six-yard box before Pollock could grab the ball.

It was Cunningham's team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Host Gwynedd-Mercy had plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the match. However, Immaculata's first-team All-CSAC goalkeeper Jessica Gaburo kept the match scoreless with some nice saves. Perhaps her best effort of the night came with about four minutes left in the second half when the Griffins were awarded a corner kick. The kick soared in front where a Griffin headed the ball towards the crossbar. Gaburo grabbed the ball out of the air, deflating the hopes of the home crowd.

Gaburo (8-10-1) made nine saves in the win. Pollock registered three saves for Gwynedd-Mercy. The Griffins outshot the Mighty Macs 15-7.
