CHESTER, Pa. - Immaculata's field hockey squad opened the 2009 slate falling to host Widener, 4-1, Wednesday night. at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Lauren Bigos scored in the 18th minute for the Mighty Macs (0-1) to make the score 2-1. However, Danielle Dudley restored the Pride's two-goal margin in the 32nd minute with Dina Haritonidis notching the assist, and Widener led 3-1 at the break.
Megan Scarpinato and Ellen Etzweiler scored 71 seconds apart in the opening half, giving the Pride all it would need for the win.
Scarpinato opened up the scoring in the 13th minute off a pass from Nicole Nardone, giving Widener a 1-0 lead. Etzweiler took her turn by converting a feed from Natalie Gifford.
Brittany Dippolito tallied off Scarpinato's pass with 25 minutes remaining in the second half, helping Widener (1-0) end with a 21-3 shots edge and an 18-1 cushion in penalty corners over Immaculata.
Megan Purcell made just one save in just under 51 minutes for the victory. Britt Worthington had nine saves for Immaculata in the loss.
Immaculata continues on the road Saturday with a visit to Albright at 1 p.m.
