COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Immaculata University's volleyball squad fell to Ursinus College in the season opener for both schools, 3-1, Saturday afternoon. The Mighty Macs won the first set, 25-21, but were unable to hold off the Bears, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-20.
Freshman Terri Reynolds registered a double-double in her first career outing, leading the Mighty Macs with 11 kills and adding 10 digs to the effort. Rookie Nicole Preziuso was second on the team with eight kills and made 10 digs. Classmate Kathleen Haefner paced Immaculata with 28 assists for the match.
Immaculata (0-1) was forced to come from behind to win the first set by winning the final five points to take the set 25-21. Late spurts by the Bears during sets two and three took the Mighty Macs out of the set.
However, Ursinus (1-0) won the first point in the fourth set, but Immaculata reeled off nine consecutive points for a 9-1 advantage. The Mighty Macs extended that lead to 12-4 before Ursinus built momentum and tied the score at 16-all.
Immaculata trailed, 21-20, but Ursinus closed the set on a four-point run to claim the set and the match, 25-20.
Overall, the Immaculata defense placed five players in double figures in digs. Senior
Lisa Bifulco led the way with 15 digs. Junior
Jayme Lenosky recorded 13 digs while freshman Courtney Sahm had 10.
Ursinus was led by two players with double-doubles. Mary Kate Wilmoth had a match-high 20 kills and 13 digs, while Elizabeth Roth added 13 kills and 18 digs. Jennifer Fargo amassed 41 assists and served seven aces.
Immaculata will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when it travels to Widener for a 7 p.m. match.
