David Smith is in his third season as the Mighty Macs' head men's and women's cross country coach in 2025.

In 2025, Immaculata men's and women's cross country were the runners-up in the Atlantic East Conference Championships, which consisted of six teams. On the men's side, Kendall Budlow was named the Elite Scholar-Athlete. Connor Kakowski and Jimmy Lauer made the All-AEC Second Team. For the women, Aubrey Donahue was selected as the conference's Runner of the Year. Smith and assistant coach Matthew Murray were honored as the Coaching Staff of the Year. Smith led the women's team to four All-AEC awards: Donahue (First Team), and Jayla Gross, Breanne Dymek, and Jacquie Leone (Second Team).

“I am confident that our cross-country teams will continue to move forward under David’s leadership,” said Paul Murphy, Immaculata's Director of Athletics and Recreation. “His knowledge and commitment to establishing a tremendous team culture that will allow our distance runners to thrive will put Immaculata’s student-athletes in a tremendous position.”

Smith came to Immaculata after spending eight years at Bayard Rustin High School. Smith was the boys’ cross country head coach and girls’ cross country assistant coach and worked with Rustin’s track distance and mid-distance athletes (800 meters & up).

“I am grateful to Paul Murphy and Immaculata University for the opportunity to step in as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country teams,” said Smith. “I look forward to the challenge of continuing to build the program and to establish the reputation of Immaculata University as a distance running school. I will be stepping into a great situation with a young team of good runners and the strong support of the University. I am eager to begin my work with each athlete to help them realize their potential and together create a great team and environment where runners can thrive.”

Smith earned his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the University of the South (Sewanee). He earned his Post BACC secondary education teaching certificates and master’s degree in Geoscience from West Chester University. Smith is employed as a chemistry, geo-science, biology and environmental science teacher at Bayard Rustin High School.
