Softball Comes up Short in Conference Opener with Neumann Knights

ASTON, Pa. – Immaculata softball fell in their doubleheader versus the Neumann University Knights on Saturday, despite a close game in the latter half of the doubleheader.

The Mighty Macs are 4-6 for the season. They are 0-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NEUMANN – GAME 1
  • Immaculata pounced first on the scoreboard, as Alexis Andrada reached on a fielder's choice for the Natalia Donofrio score. Despite two Neumann runs in the bottom of the first, the Mighty Macs tied it in the second on an Emma Pinto RBI double. Both sides battled defensively before a Neumann RBI double put them up one. Immaculata retired the final two batters, but the Knights led 3-2 after three.
  • Neumann grabbed four scores in the bottom of the fourth to lead by five. Immaculata countered in the sixth with three runs of their own. Pinto, Donofrio, and Jamie Green each knocked in RBIs to cut into the deficit. Even though the Mighty Macs pulled to within two, the Knights registered five runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the game. Neumann took game one 12-5.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – GAME 1
  • Donofrio scored two runs.
  • Casey Pasco, Pinto, and Madison Formica each had two hits.
  • Pinto added two RBIs.
  • Sara Pierson started on the mound for three innings and struck out three batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NEUMANN – GAME 2
  • The Knights went up 2-0 in the first before the Mighty Macs ended the defensive inning on a popout. Immaculata's offense remained quiet, but Neumann added to their lead in the third on a sac-fly. Neumann led 3-0 through three innings.
  • Both sides could not capitalize with runners in scoring position in the fourth. Despite the Knights taking a 5-0 advantage in the fifth, Immaculata ended the potential shutout in the sixth with a Jamie Green RBI single to score Carlee Karcher. Emma Pinto and Isabella Pastella both knocked in singles to cut the deficit to 5-3. Rukudzo Taruwinga, coming in as a pinch hitter, turned the game around with a two-RBI triple. After a pitching change, a Natalia Donofrio bunt segued into a score for Taruwinga on a throwing error. It was 6-5 Immaculata. Despite a one-run lead late, the Knights made the comeback in the bottom of the seventh. A walk-off RBI single ended the afternoon. Neumann won game two 7-6 and swept the series.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – GAME 2
  • Six Mighty Macs tied with one run each.
  • Karcher, Green, Pastella, and Alexis Andrada all had two hits.
  • Taruwinga logged two RBIs.
  • Aubrey Seider started four innings on the hill and struck out a batter.
