MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Immaculata University baseball team used a big fourth inning and strong pitching to earn a 12–2 victory over Otterbein University on Saturday morning in their final game at the Ripken Experience for their spring break trip.
The Mighty Macs scored in five different innings and took advantage of Otterbein miscues to secure the win in Myrtle Beach.
With the win, Immaculata improves to 3-8 overall, while Otterbein falls to 1-12 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST OTTERBEIN
- Immaculata opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Matt Passerini crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Logan Barndt. The Macs added another run in the second as Passerini delivered an RBI single to bring home Luke Baumann, extending the lead to 2–0.
- Immaculata extended the lead to 3-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Nick Turnage.
- Otterbein cut into the deficit in the fourth, with a two-run double to make the score 3-2.
- Immaculata responded in the bottom of the fourth with its biggest inning of the game as Danny Nocito launched a grand slam to left field to give the Mighty Macs a commanding 7–2 advantage.
- Immaculata continued to build on its lead late in the game. A run scored in the sixth before the Mighty Macs added four more in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Joey Mozzone and an RBI hit by Barndt to secure the 12–2 final in 7 innings.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- On the mound, Thomas DeSarno earned the win after tossing six strong innings. DeSarno allowed five hits and two runs—both unearned—while striking out three.
- Ryan Barrow pitched the final inning in relief.
- Nocito led the way with a home run, double, four RBIs, and two runs scored.
- Passerini reached base three times, scored three runs, and drove in another.
- Mozzone added two RBIs.
- Barndt and JT Luther each contributed multiple hits as the Macs totaled nine hits in the contest.
