Big First Inning Lifts Baseball to Win Over Penn College, 22-11

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning as they went on to defeat Penn College 22-11 in a non-conference game on Thursday. Will Kelley had four RBIs and Steven Theisen and Kristian Saucedo each drove in three runs to lead Immaculata. Alex LePage threw a planned two scoreless innings with five strikeouts to be credited with his fifth win of the season. With the win Immaculata improved to 9-21 overall, and they are 4-5 in AEC play. Penn College falls to 15-14 overall, and they are 8-3 in United East Conference play. 

How it Happened 

  • Immaculata scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first four runs scored on bases loaded walks by Ryan Nace, Logan Barndt, and Kristian Saucedo. The fifth run scored on a balk. Matt Passerini drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the sixth run. Steven Theisen cleared the bases with a three-run double to increase the lead to 9-0. Logan Barndt drove in second run with his second bases loaded walk of the inning. Ryan Struble drove in a run with a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, and Will Kelly picked up another RBI on a fielder's choice to give Immaculata a 12-0 lead. 

  • In the bottom of the third inning, Will Kelley and Kristian Saucedo drove in runs with bases loaded walks. Joey Mazzone got an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Ryan Struble. Matt Passerini hit a two-run single to right center to score Mazzone and Kelley to make the score 17-0. 

  • Penn College scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Immaculata lead to 17-5. 

  • Penn College scored a run in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 19-6. 

  • Penn College scored a run in the top of the sixth inning on a ground out and scored four runs in the top of the seventh on a grand slam to make the score 22-11.  

  • Immaculata would go on to win the game 22-11.

  • Will Kelley was 1-2 with two runs scored, two walks, and four RBIs. 

  • Steven Theisen was 1-3, with two runs scored, a double, and three RBIs.
