LePage throws one hitter at Ursinus, Mighty Macs take first of two from Bears

Ursinus’ leadoff single was their lone hit as Alex LePage struck out twelve and tossed a complete game.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team split their Saturday doubleheader at Ursinus College, taking the first matchup 7-1 before falling 6-9 in the second. Alex LePage was dominant on the bump in game one, silencing an offense that averaged 7.8 runs per game and had posted double-digit runs six times this season. LePage struck out twelve batters and surrendered one hit to the Bears during his complete game performance, allowing no earned runs. The Mighty Macs let a late lead slip in game two, as Ursinus delivered three runs in three consecutive innings to steal the second matchup 6-9. Immaculata sits 4-13 on the year as Ursinus moves to 13-5 on the season.

Game One: Immaculata 7, Ursinus 1
How it Happened
  • Alex LePage had a stellar complete game performance, allowing a hit to the first batter and surrendering none since. Ursinus' leadoff man stole second, taking third on an erroneous throw during the steal attempt. He'd cross the plate for an unearned run on an RBI groundout.
  • Immaculata's lineup went down quietly in the first and second inning before heating up in the third. In the third, Robert Woodward drew a one out walk as Will Kelley had a two out single. Matt Passerni followed with an RBI single to tie the game 1-1. The Mighty Macs then capitalized on a throwing error to bring their second run across.
  • Ursinus struggled to touch Alex LePage, who had two strikeouts in each of the first four innings.
  • Ryan Nace led off the fourth inning with a double to right field. Jacob Kupsey followed with a single, taking second on the throw as Nace went first-to-third. Maddox Stern drew a two out walk to load the bases for Will Kelley, who met the moment with a 2-run single to put the Mighty Macs ahead 4-1.
  • Steven Theisen led off the fifth with a double as Serici reached on a bunt single. Ryan Nace was hit by a pitch as the Macs loaded the bases for Nick Turnage. Turnage hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Theisen and moving Serici to third. Two batters later, Serici scored on a wild pitch, giving Immaculata a five run lead.
  • The sixth, seventh and eighth innings were quiet for both sides, as neither offense put runners in scoring position. LePage made quick work of Ursinus' lineup in the seventh and eighth, retiring the Bears in order in each inning.
  • The Mighty Macs tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as Steven Theisen and Ryan Nace each moved runners with sac bunts. Matt Passerini scored to put Immaculata up 7-1.
  • Alex LePage closed the book on game one as the Bears' lineup went three up, three down in the final frame.

Inside the Numbers
  • Alex LePage recorded all 27 outs, surrendering an unearned run, one hit, and four walks, while punching out 12 batters.
  • Will Kelley went 2-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
  • Steven Theisen was 2-4 with a double, a stolen base, and a run.
  • Sal Serici went 2-4 at the plate with a run and a walk.
  • Ryan Nace was 1-3 with a double, an RBI, a run, and a hit by pitch.

Game Two: Ursinus 9, Immaculata 6
How it Happened
  • Jordan Silvestri had a very strong start for Immaculata, holding Ursinus scoreless through five innings of work. Silvestri retired the Bears 1-2-3 in the first, punched out three in the second, struck out two in the third, retired the Bears in order in the fourth, and pitched a clean fifth inning. Ursinus managed just two hits and no walks off Jordan Silvestri through five innings.
  • Immaculata scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth. There, Will Kelley led off with a walk as Matt Passerini reached on a fielder's choice on a bunt attempt. Passerini took second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Sal Serici single as the Macs led 1-0.
  • The Mighty Macs poured on five runs in the top of the sixth. Steven Theisen collected an RBI single before Sal Serici had a sac fly. Blake Schantz singled up the middle as IU led 4-0.
  • With Schantz on, Ryan Struble homered to left field to push Immaculata ahead 6-0.
  • Entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Jordan Silvestri had allowed just two hits, no walks, and three total baserunners. Silvestri continued into the inning, where he struck out the first batter. Ursinus then back-to-back two singles up the middle before Silvestri rang up the second out. A double down the left field line and single through the left side brought three runs across before Silvestri ended the frame on a strikeout.
  • The Mighty Macs had their starting pitcher start the seventh, as Silvestri fanned the first batter. Urisnus got consecutive infield hits to put two on before a two-out single and double tied the ballgame 6-6. Brian Dino recorded the third out in relief.
  • Immaculata left two men on in the top of the eighth.
  • Ursinus used the bottom of the eighth to generate a three run lead with a three run inning. The Bears held the Mighty Macs off in the final frame, completing a six run comeback to overcome Immaculata, 6-9.
