Macs Honor Seniors in Doubleheader Sweep Over Neumann

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata softball team swept their doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon against Neumann University, winning game one by a score of 5-3 and game two 7-4.

In between games of the doubleheader, the Mighty Macs honored the four members of their 2023 senior class in Carly Grandizio, Elena Anglani, Alyssa Daly, and Sara Rode for their tremendous careers at Immaculata. Graduate student, Sarah Guido was recognized as well, for her career at Immaculata.

Game One: Immaculata 5, Neumann 3

Neumann opened the scoring early in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs to take an early 3-0 lead.

Immaculata would get base runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings but were unable to get on the board.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jess Oldham, and Lauren Carboni each singled to centerfield to give the Mighty Macs runners at the corners. Peyton McGowan followed with a three-run home run to left center to tie the score at 3-3. This was McGowan's team leading third home run of the season.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Kaitlyn Carter doubled left field, and advanced to third on a fly ball by Alyssa Daly. Carly Grandizio put the Macs ahead to stay with a two-run home run to leftfield to give Immaculata a 5-3 lead. This was Grandizio's first home run of collegiate career.

Starting pitcher Emma Mercadante earned the complete game win, scattering five hits, three earned runs, and striking out three. Mercadante raised her record to 4-6 on the season.

Game Two: Immaculata 7, Neumann 3

Neumann would once again open the scoring in the top of the first inning, scoring a pair of runs as they had a 2-0 lead with Immaculata coming to bat.

Immaculata would respond in the bottom half of the first. Jess Oldham reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop that scored Bryele Anthony. Peyton McGowan would follow with a double to left center that scored Jess Oldham. Kaitlyn Carter then doubled to left field to score Peyton McGowan as Immaculata took a 3-2 lead.

Immaculata would add on a run in the bottom of the second inning when Jess Oldham singled to center field to score Bryele Anthony as Immaculata increased their lead to 4-2.

Neumann would bounce back in the top of the third inning to score a pair of runs to tie the game at 4-4.

Immaculata would re-take the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Elena Anglani doubled to right center to score Kaitlyn Carter. Immaculata would add on to their lead with single runs in the fourth inning when Alyssa Daly singled to leftfield to score Rylee Martin, and in the sixth when Alyssa Daly singled to score Riece Onorato.

Starting pitcher Sarah Guido earned the complete game win in her final appearance in a Mighty Mac uniform allowing eight hits, four earned runs, no walks, and struck out two. Guido raised her record on the season to 4-6.

Centerfielder Bryele Anthony added on to her Immaculata single season stolen base record stealing her 26th base of the season.

The Immaculata softball team has now concluded their 2023 season with an overall record of 13-21, and record of 3-9 in Atlantic East Conference play.
