IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata women's lacrosse team opened Atlantic East Conference play defeating Gwynedd Mercy 14-13 in sudden-victory overtime.
In the first quarter of Gwynedd Mercy got on the board first with 12:01 remaining in the first quarter, before
Liza Laxton scored to tie the game at 1-1. Gwynedd Mercy would score the next two goals and led 3-1. Immaculata responded scoring three consecutive goals, with
Kaitlyn Klitchko scoring the first goal and
Jacki Murray scoring the next two as Immaculata led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Immaculata would get goals from
Jacki Murray,
Carly Oberg, and a pair of goals from
Liza Laxton. Immaculata would take an 8-5 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter,
Jacki Murray scored early before Gwynedd Mercy would score two goals to cut Immaculata's lead to 9-7.
Liza Laxton would score two goals, and Jack Murray would add another goal as Immaculata led 12-9 going into the final quarter.
Jacki Murray would put Immaculata up 13-9 early in the fourth quarter. Gwynedd Mercy would not go quietly and chipped away at the Immaculata lead. Gwynedd Mercy would tie the game at 13-13 with only 0:30 remaining on the clock. Immaculata thought they had scored the game winner with 0:05 remaining when
Jacki Murray scored quickly off a pass from
Liza Laxton, but the goal was waived off by the officials due to an illegal celebration, and the game went to overtime.
Off the draw control in overtime won by Gwynedd Mercy, Immaculata's
Jacki Murray caused a turnover, and got the ground ball.
Jacki Murray would take the ball down and scored the goal to win the game for Immaculata only 0:34 seconds into overtime.
Immaculata was led offensively by
Jacki Murray with seven goals, four draw controls, three caused turnovers, and five ground balls.
Liza Laxton had five goals and two assists, and four draw controls.
Carly Oberg added one goal and one assist, and
Kaitlyn Klitchko scored one goal. On the defensive side
Ava Hoffman contributed seven draw controls, three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Goalkeeper
Amelia Slick made 11 saves, and added eight groundballs.
The Immaculata women's lacrosse team (3-7, 1-1, Atlantic East) will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12
th when they will visit Neumann University for an Atlantic East Conference game at 5:00 PM.
