Wright Grand Slam Spurs Macs Over Cavaliers

RADNOR, Pa. – Joey Wright ripped a grand slam, batting in five runners on the day as the Immaculata baseball team took down Cabrini 7-4 on Thursday afternoon. The Mighty Macs now improve to an 18-6 record with a perfect 7-0 conference record on the season.

After three scoreless frames to kick off the contest, the Mighty Macs broke the ice in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Jay Lawrence ripped a single back to the pitcher to put a runner on for the Macs. Subsequent singles from Steven Theisen and Frank Margiotta then loaded the base for the Mighty Macs. The Cavaliers then hit the next two batters in Joey Sacco and Joey Wright as both batters earned an RBI on their free pass, giving the Macs a 2-0 lead.

Cabrini got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the Macs' lead down to one run.

Later, in the top of the sixth inning, Lawrence worked a leadoff walk to begin another rally for the Macs. Theisen then walked before Margiotta reached base on an error, loading the bases for the Mighty Macs. Later, with one out, Joey Wright stepped to the plate and ripped a full-count grand slam into left field, giving the Mighty Macs a 6-1 lead over the Cavaliers.

Over the bottom of the sixth and bottom of the seventh innings, the cavaliers scored three runs, getting back into the contest as the Macs held a 6-4 advantage over the Cavaliers.

With a two-run advantage going into the top of the ninth, a hit-by-pitch to Jason Smiley put a baserunner on for Immaculata two outs. Ryan Struble then slapped a single into right-center field, scoring Smiley and increasing Immaculata's lead to 7-4.

Trevor Wagner prevented a rally in the bottom of the ninth, finishing out a three-inning save for the Mighty Macs as they claimed a 7-4 victory over the Cavaliers. Wagner's save, his fifth on the season, came after a three-inning performance, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five Cavaliers batters. Jason Hughes, meanwhile, improves to a 4-0 record on the year after pitching six frames of zero-earned run baseball while striking out six batters.

Joey Wright's grand slam highlights the Macs offensively on the game as Wright went 1-for-3 with five RBI, one run scored, and one walk. Steven Theisen, meanwhile, went 3-for-5 on the day, scoring two runs for the Macs.

The Mighty Macs will return to action on Monday as they host Cabrini in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 P.M.
