IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata men's swimming team is set for the 2021-22 Atlantic East Conference Swimming Championship, scheduled to begin on Friday morning.
Following a multi-site version of the Atlantic East Championship in 2020-21, the 2021-22 Championship will return to the conventional three-day competition hosted by St. Mary's College in St. Mary's City, Md.
"The main message throughout our taper leading into this meet is, 'you have to want it,'" explained head coach
Kathleen Womelsdorf. "The men are focused and ready to get the job done. As a whole, the team has a healthy balanced energy of nerves and excitement. I give a lot of credit to our upper classmen who assisted in preparing our sophomores and freshmen who will be experiencing their first true conference meet."
The Mighty Macs are led by senior
John Batley who currently owns five program records and has held claim to nine throughout his career at Immaculata. This season, Batley has broken the program records in the 50-yard backstroke, the 200 backstroke, and the 100 individual medley. Batley is joined by junior
William Lorenzo as the Mighty Macs' two upperclassmen.
"In order to be successful, everyone has to remember all of the hard work and time we have put into training this season," detailed Batley. " We have to support each other and cheer each other on during our races. This team has worked hard all season, supporting each other each step of the way which has led to a successful season and one we will continue to have this weekend."
The Macs also field four returning sophomores in
Marchello Barile,
Jeremy Brown,
Kevin Lyons, and
Daniel Thiel. Rounding out the program's roster is freshman
Gabriel Bocaj, who has broken 10 program records in his first year of collegiate swimming ranging from freestyle to breaststroke to individual medley, including both sprint and distance events.
