WASHINGTON, D.C. – An early lead was not enough on Saturday as the Mighty Macs baseball team fell to the Marymount Saints 10-5 in the Atlantic East Championship game.
The Mighty Macs started off strong in the top of the first with a one-out double into right field from
Tyler Kmiec. After advancing to third on a single by
Josh Crowding, Kmiec scored on a sacrifice fly into right field by
Joey Wright.
Following a two-strikeout bottom of the first for starting pitcher
Mason Keller, the Mighty Macs put on the pressure in the top of the second.
Steven Theisen led off the inning with an infield single to third base.
Greg Dahl followed Theisen up with a single of his own into left field. A
Joe Sacco walk found the Mighty Macs with the bases loaded and no outs. Kmiec then walked, batting in Theisen before Crowding hit a two-RBI single of his own up the middle. Sacco and Dahl scored on the paly as the Mighty Macs took a 4-0 lead.
The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring one run on an RBI-single.
Isaiah Payton responded in the top of the third, hitting a solo home run into right-center field, restoring the Mighty Macs' four-run lead at 5-1.
After two scoreless frames, Marymount scored one run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, cutting Immaculata's lead to 5-2.
Keller pitched 5.2 innings for the Mighty Macs, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out seven. Keller fell into trouble in the bottom of the sixth, leaving the bases loaded with two outs as the Mighty Macs went to the bullpen.
Brady Fidler entered in relief, making a defensive stop on a hard-hit ball up the middle as the Mighty Macs got out of the jam unscathed.
Immaculata would not be as lucky in the bottom of the seventh, however, as Marymount loaded the bases with no outs on the inning. They went on to score eight runs on the inning, taking the lead over Immaculata 10-5.
The Mighty Macs were left hitless in the eighth and ninth inning as Marymount secured the Atlantic East title.
The Mighty Macs now await to see if their season will continue with an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. The Division III NCAA selection show will announce bids and seedings on Sunday, May 23
