RADNOR, Pa.- In need of a victory to secure the second seed in the upcoming Atlantic East Tournament, the Immaculata baseball team took to the road on Thursday afternoon for a doubleheader vs Atlantic East rival Cabrini. Immaculata got the victory it was looking for in the first game of the afternoon as Immaculata prevailed in a high-scoring affair by a final of 29-13 before dropping the nightcap by a final of 22-8.
Game One: Immaculata 29 Cabrini 13
In the first game of the afternoon, Immaculata jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after an RBI sac fly from
Josh Crowding and an RBI fielders choice from
Joey Wright for the first of his program-record nine RBI on the afternoon. Cabrini answered quickly with a pair of runs of its own in the home half of the first to even the score at 2-2.
In the top of the second, Crowding delivered once again with an RBI double to left center, which scored
Frank Margiotta to give the Macs a 3-2 lead. Wright followed this up with a grand slam over the center field fence to give Immaculata an early 7-2 advantage entering the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the second, Cabrini countered with a seven-run home half to claim its first lead of the game, making the score 9-7 in favor of the Cavaliers entering the third inning.
In the top of the third,
Joey Sacco worked a bases-loaded walk to score
RJ Mason and trim the deficit to 9-8. Immaculata evened the score moments later with an RBI single off the bat of
Tyler Kmiec to score Margiotta before
Richard Fontanillas worked a bases loaded walk of his own to plate
Greg Dahl and give the Macs back a 10-9 lead. Wright followed this up a two-RBI double into the left center field gap to score Kmiec and Sacco before coming around to score with Fontanillas on a two-RBI single from
Isaiah Payton, which gave Immaculata a 14-9 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Cabrini began to battle back once again as the Cavaliers hit back-to-back home runs to trim the deficit to 14-11. These two runs would be the last runs Cabrini would score until the bottom of the seventh when the Cavaliers got a pair of runs back via a two-run home run to center field in the 29-13 setback.
While the Cabrini offense slowed from this point, Immaculata continued to fire on all cylinders as the Macs scored six more runs in the top of the fourth via a solo home run from Kmiec, another two RBI double from Wright, a throwing error the Cabrini shortstop, and a two-run home run from Mason to score Payton who had reached on the error to extend the lead to 20-11.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Immaculata tacked on eight more runs in the sixth, beginning with Fontanillas scoring on a fielding error, which also allowed Mason to reach first safely to extend the lead to 21-11. Margiotta followed this up with an RBI single to right to score Payton before
Greg Dahl reached on a fielders choice, which scored Payton to give the Macs a 23-11 lead. Sacco followed this up with an RBI single before Kmiec launched a three-run home run to left to score Sacco and Dahl and give the Macs a 27-11 lead. Crowding scored the Macs final run of the sixth inning with a solo home run to left as Immaculata carried a commanding 28-11 lead into the home half of the sixth.
Immaculata scored its final run of the contest when Dahl laced an RBI double down the left field line to score
Steven Theisen, which extended the Macs advantage to 29-11 entering the home half of the seventh. Cabrini scored two more runs in the home half of the seventh but it was not enough for the Cavaliers to complete the comeback as Immaculata held on for the 29-13 victory.
Ryan Crowell got the start on the mound, lasting just 1.1 surrendering eight runs on five hits while walking four and striking out a pair.
Mason Keller entered in relief and picked up his sixth win of the season surrendering three runs on four hits before exiting.
Stephen DiBatista entered in relief of Keller and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings scattering just one hit and three walks before exiting in favor of Louis Flores who pitched the final 2.1 scattering two runs on four hits while striking out four in the victory.
Jonathan Baker got the start for Cabrini lasting just two innings and surrendering seven runs while teammate Nicholas Gares took the loss after giving up four runs without recording an out in the top of the third.
In addition to Wright setting the single-game RBI record, Immaculata also broke its program record for runs scored in this victory, surpassing the previous high of 28, which was also set on the road at Cabrini during the 2019 season.
Game Two: Cabrini 22 Immaculata 8
In the top of the first, Immaculata wasted little time in starting its offense once again as
Joey Wright laced an RBI single into left to score Kmiec and give the Macs an early 1-0 advantage. This lead grew moments later with a bases-loaded walk by Payton to score Crowding and give the visiting Macs a 2-0 lead entering the home half of the first.
In the bottom of the first, Cabrini responded with a run of its own to trim the deficit to 2-1 entering the second inning of play.
In the top of the second, Immaculata scored once again as Margiotta raced home on a double-play ball off the bat of Kmiec to extend the lead to 3-1.
After a scoreless third inning, Immaculata added another run via a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sacco, which scored Margiotta to extend the lead to 4-1.
This would prove to be the Macs final lead of the contest as Cabrini countered with a pair of seven run innings in the fourth and fifth to take a commanding 15-4 lead over the Mighty Macs.
In the sixth inning, Kmiec continued his big afternoon with a two-run home run to center field, which made the score 15-6. In the seventh, Kmiec struck again with an RBI single into right field to score Margiotta once again and cut the deficit to 15-7. Cabrini answered back with five runs of its own in the home half of the seventh to extend the lead back to 20-7.
In the top of the eighth, Immaculata pushed another run across as Margiotta reached on a fielders choice, which scored Wright to make the score 20-8. Following this, Cabrini answered once again with another two-run home run to extend its lead to 20-8, which the Cavaliers would go on to win by.
Ray Lutick got the start and the loss for Immaculata tossing 3.1 innings surrendering six runs on six hits while striking out three.
Trevor Wagner entered in relief and lasted just one inning giving up seven hits and eight runs before being relieved by
Michael Gama. Gama, tossed 1.2 scattering two hits and one run. Grandelli and Cannon each entered for the Macs and surrendered three runs on one hit each before
Derek Andrada entered for the eighth and allowed one run on one hit while striking out a pair in the setback.
Immaculata and Cabrini will meet again next Wednesday afternoon at Immaculata in what will be the opening game of the Atlantic East Tournament for each team.
