GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Mighty Macs baseball team split their doubleheader versus Gwynedd Mercy today, dropping game one 8-3 before claiming a 15-7 victory in game two.
The Griffins scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to open up scoring in game one.
In the top of the fifth inning,
RJ Mason hit a lead-off single into right field, advancing to third base on an error by the right fielder.
Frank Margiotta would then bat Mason in on a groundout to second base to cut the Griffins' lead to 3-1.
Gwynedd would respond in the bottom of the fifth, however, scoring two additional runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Josh Crowding hit a one-out triple in the top of the sixth inning.
Richard Fontanillas then stepped up to the bat and smacked a double into left field, scoring Crowding. Following a balk and a
Joey Wright walk,
Isaiah Payton stroked a single into left field, scoring Fontanillas to cut Gwynedd Mercy's lead to 5-3.
Gwynedd Mercy would later add three runs in the bottom of the sixth, solidifying their 8-3 game one victory.
Fontanillas and Mason each went 2-for-3 on the game for the Mighty Macs. Fontanillas hit a double and recorded one run and one RBI while Mason also earned one run.
In the top of the second in game two,
Joey Wright reached base on a lead-off error. Following two outs and consecutive walks to
Steven Theisen and Margiotta, the bases were loaded for Joe Sacco. Sacco squared up for a bunt, reaching on an infield single while Wright scored to give Immaculata a 1-0 lead.
With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Margiotta hit a single into left field to kick off the inning. After stealing second base, Margiotta would score on an RBI-single by Sacco. With two outs, Crowding then stepped to the plate and smacked a double into center field, scoring Sacco from first base to give Immaculata a 3-0 lead.
The Mighty Macs got aggressive on the basepath in the top of the fifth. First, with two outs, Mason reached base on a bunt single before stealing second base. After a walk from Theisen, the runners would advance to second and third base on an error by the third basemen. Mason then scored on a wild pitch while Theisen moved to third base. Margiotta then also reached base on a walk. Then, with two outs, Theisen and Margiotta executed a double steal with Theisen scoring as Margiotta reached second base, giving Immaculata a 5-0 lead.
Gwynedd Mercy got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fifth as the Mighty Macs maintained a 5-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Fontanillas hit a one-out single into left field before advancing to second a single into right field by Wright. With two runners on, Payton hit an RBI-single into right field, scoring Fontanillas to take a 6-1 lead. Gwynedd scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 6-2.
Immaculata scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sacco led off festivities with a single into left field. Kmiec then reached base on an error, with both runners advancing to second and third. Crowding hit a sacrifice fly into right field, scoring Sacco and advancing Kmiec to third. Fontanillas and Wright then hit back-to-back doubles with Fontanillas scoring Kmiec while Wright batted in Fontanillas. Dahl then reached base on an error by the left fielder while Wright scored, closing out the inning with a 10-2 Immaculata lead.
Gwynedd Mercy scored one run in the bottom of seventh as Immaculata kept a 10-3 lead.
Louis Sharp reached base in the top of the eighth inning on an error. He would eventually score on a sacrifice fly from Kmiec. Gwynedd also scored two runs in the inning as the score stood 11-5 heading into the ninth.
Mason reached base with one out in the top of the ninth on a single into left field. Then, with two outs, Sharp hit a sharp single into center field to score Mason. After a walk from Sacco, Kmiec hit an RBI-single into right field, scoring Sharp as Sacco reached second base. Crowding then batted both runners in on a double into right field, capping out the Mighty Macs' production on the day with a 15-5 lead.
Gwynedd Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth before the Mighty Macs closed it out, winning 15-7.
Crowding went 3-for-5 on the game for the Mighty Macs, tacking two RBI and two doubles. Sacco, meanwhile went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Immaculata will return to action on Friday, April 30
th as they travel to Arlington, Va. to kick off their series against Marymout.
