Softball Extends Winning Streak on Thursday Afternoon

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Immaculata softball team was back in action on Thursday afternoon in Myrtle Beach for its final day of competition for its annual Spring Break trip. Immaculata registered a pair of five-inning victories this afternoon defeating Clarks Summit 17-4 before dispatching Albertus Magnus by a final of 12-3 in the nightcap.

In the first game of the day, Immaculata scored 17 runs thanks in large part to a nine-run second inning. Immaculata opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first courtesy of an RBI single from Emily Mesey and a SAC Fly from Keani Hindle to claim an early 2-0 lead.

During the second inning of play, Immaculata got things rolling once again when Cat Knoll scampered home on an error that allowed Katy Newton to reach to extend the lead to 3-0. Abby Carter followed this up with an RBI single before Sara Rode added a SAC Fly RBI of her own to extend the lead to 5-0. Mesey registered an RBI double before a string of RBI singles Knoll, Newton, Tori Fortuna, and Carly Grandizio combined to give Immaculata a commanding 11-0 lead after the first two innings.

During the top of the third, Clarks Summit responded with a run of its own to trim the deficit to 11-1. In the home half of the third, Immaculata responded with a string of RBI singles once again this time from Laura Dilucia, Knoll, Sarah Reed, Elena Anglani, Fortuna, and Grandizio to score six more runs in the inning and claim a commanding 17-1 lead.

Heading into the top of the fourth, Nicole Kowalski entered in relief of Sarah Guido who would earn the victory after a solid three-inning effort that saw her scatter just two hits and one unearned run while striking out to earn the victory.

In relief, Kowalski turned in a quick fourth inning retiring the Defenders easily, which allowed Immaculata to maintain its lead heading into the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Clarks Summit responded with three runs of its own courtesy of a pair of RBI doubles to trim the deficit to 17-4. Kowalski retired the next two batters easily to secure the 17-4 victory for the Macs.

In the nightcap, Immaculata squared off against another talented non-league foe in Albertus Magnus. Immaculata once again benefited from an explosive fourth inning to take the 12-3 victory in five innings.

Albertus Magnus opened the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI single and impressive base running to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second. In the home half of the second, Immaculata responded with a pair of runs of its own courtesy of an RBI single from Dilucia and a defensive miscue by the Falcons to even the score at 2-2.

Immaculata used this same combination in the third inning as Paige Gerst recorded an RBI single to drive in Keani Hindle before Michaela Petito came around to score when Dilucia reached on an error by the Falcons to claim a 4-2 lead.

In the home half of the fourth, Immaculata turned in an impressive eight-run inning, which was started by a solo home run off the bat of Hindle. Newton, Dilucia, Rode, and Mesey followed this up with RBI singles to extend the lead to 10-2. Hindle added another two RBI via an RBI double to score Rode and Mesey later in the inning, which gave Immaculata a commanding 12-2 lead.

Albertus Magnus responded with a run of its own during the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI double but it was not enough to avoid the 12-3 setback on Thursday evening.

Michaela Petito got the start for Immaculata as she went the distance in the circle scattering six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four to earn the victory.
