SALISBURY,MD- The Mighty Macs baseball team had its bats silenced in an 11-0 season opening loss to No. 13 Salisbury on Wednesday afternoon. Immaculata was limited to four hits in the contest as the Sea Gulls collected 13 hits, including six extra-base knocks.
Immaculata (0-1) threatened in the second inning as Josh Crowding led off the inning with a walk and Trevor Wagner laced a single to left field to put runners on first and second with no outs. Starting pitcher Jackson Balzan was able to get two consecutive strikeouts and an out on a humpback liner to escape the early jam.
Immaculata used another leadoff walk in the top of the third to put another threat to the Sea Gulls as Chris Szekeres drew a walk and stole second with nobody out. Balzan got out of trouble again with two more punch outs and a pop-up.
Brandon Bonesteel got the first hit in the bottom of the third for the Seagulls in a big way by launching a home run to right field to give Salisbury an early 1-0 lead. Ryan Crowell was able to limit the damage and kept the lead at one heading into the fourth.
Salisbury scored another in the fourth following a pair of doubles by the Sea Gulls. Meekins doubled down the left field line to start the inning and Monaghan drove him in with an RBI double but was gunned down trying to stretch it into a triple on a perfectly executed relay as Salisbury led 2-0 at the end of four innings. Â
Following a scoreless inning by Mason Keller, the Freshman was charged with two runs in the sixth, as the Sea Gulls used a pair of RBI doubles to extend its lead to 4-0 at the end of six innings.
Salisbury blew the game open in the eighth, scoring seven runs on seven hits during the frame.
Crowell (0-1) went four innings while allowing two runs on three hits for the Mighty Macs. Crowell induced nine flyouts and two ground outs as the starter. Wagner had two of the team's hits while Coy Walters and Joey Wright each recorded a base hit.
Balzan struck out 11 in six innings of one-hit work to earn the win for Salisbury (3-0). Colt Stemkowski and Jason McDonough combined for the combined shutout.
Immaculata returns to action in double header at MSI on Sunday against Rutgers-Camden beginning at 12 p.m.
