ASTON, Pa. - The Immaculata University women's lacrosse team trailed by two following a high-scoring first half in Saturday's Atlantic East Conference quarterfinal matchup at Neumann and, despite tying the game with just under five minutes in regulation, the Knights were able to net the game-winning goal with 23 seconds remaining to escape with a 15-14 victory.
Layne Kennedy led the Macs with another seven-goal performance, while
Bailey Krewson added three of her own in the effort.
The Mighty Macs finish the 2019 season with a 6-11 overall record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Kennedy,
Kayla Cadden and
Anna DiDonato all netted goals in the first ten-plus minutes of the quarterfinal matchup to stake the Macs to a 5-1 lead in the early going, but Neumann was quick to retaliate, tying the game at six-all at the 7:58 mark of the first half.
-Krewson put the Macs back out in front on an assist from DiDonato before the two sides traded goals to meet at an 8-8 tie with 1:45 left in the half. The Knights went on to score the final two goals of the half to take a two-goal advantage into the break.
-Kennedy and Krewson netted back-to-back scores to open the second half to cut the deficit to one, before Krewson and
Maddy Terry went back-to-back to tie the game at 12 at the 16:38 mark.
-The Macs trailed by one in the final minutes of regulation, 14-13, but Kennedy came up with a huge goal - her seventh of the day - to tie the game at 14 with under five minutes left on the clock. However, Neumann converted on its final possession to net the game-winning goal with 23 seconds remaining to come away with the one-goal win.
