FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Immaculata University baseball team picked up a pair of victories Wednesday to run its win streak to a season-high three down in Fort Pierce, Fla. behind big days at the plate from freshman
Corey Pezak and
Tom Prato paired with strong performances from the Mighty Mac bullpen. The Macs took down Earlham College, 4-3, in the noon game before battling back for nine runs in the final four innings to defeat the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the nightcap, 11-6.
Freshman
Anthony Yarson earned his first collegiate victory on the mound in game two with five solid innings in relief while fellow rookie
Ryan Crowell notched his first save with two scoreless innings, including three strikeouts.
IMMACULATA 4, EARLHAM 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sophomore left-hander
Chris Huyette was solid in his first start of the season for the Macs, allowing just four hits over his first four innings of work and striking out a pair in the bottom of the first to work around a two-out Earlham double.
-The Macs opened the scoring in the top of the second when
Cameron Delisle connected for a one-out single through the left side followed by a
Connor Blesi base knock to left-center to get IU in business.
Corey Pezak then jumped on the first pitch he saw, driving a double to the gap in left-center to score both Delisle and Blesi.Â
-The two sides traded single tallies in the third and scoreless frames in the fourth before the Macs added a crucial fourth run in the fifth.
Tyler Kmiec led off the top half of the frame with a double and moved up to third on a wild pitch, allowing
Tom Prato to plate the IU third baseman with a sacrifice fly to left.
-
Greg Grandelli came on in relief for the Macs with two outs in the fifth and was dominant, striking out a pair while allowing only two hits in two and two-thirds scoreless innings to put himself in line for the win.
-
Zach Smiley was then summoned from the bullpen two get the final two outs of the eighth inning with two runners on. The senior reliever loaded the bases with one out, but a strike out and ground out to follow stranded all three runners and kept the three-run lead intact.
-Earlham was able to load the bases yet again - and bring the potential winning run to the plate - in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but Smiley again was able to evade trouble with his third strikeout of his appearance and a fly out to center to end it to pick up his first save of the season.

-The Dolphins matched the Macs in the top of the fourth with a two-run inning to regain a three-run lead, but Prato delivered another big at-bat in the bottom of the fifth to flip the momentum.
Joey Sacco, Kmiec and Fontanillas all reached with out to load the bases to bring Prato to the plate, who ripped a bases-clearing double to the gap in left-center to knot the game at five. With a runner still in scoring position with two away,
