STEVENSON, Md. - The Immaculata University baseball trailed by two through seven innings Thursday afternoon at Stevenson - the second of a five-game week for the Macs - and
Ty Esenwein came through with a bases-clearing single to vault the Macs into the lead, and eventually a road victory, 8-4. SophomoreÂ
Chris Huyette threw two and two-thirds innings of one-hit ball in relief to pick up his first Immaculata victory on the mound after working for the second consecutive day.
Esenwein finished the day with four runs driven in, while
Cameron Delisle logged the lone multi-hit afternoon for the Macs with a pair of runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Macs were first on the board for the second straight day after
Joey Sacco and
Tyler Kmiec drew consecutive walks to start the game before a Delisle infield single loaded the bases with one out. Esenwein followed with a ground out to second, scoring Sacco with the game's first run.
-After a 1-2-3 first from
Timmy Newell to cap off the bottom half of the frame, Stevenson answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of RBI doubles to take a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs also tacked on another run in the third to extend their lead to two.
-The Macs stranded two in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth innings, as IU then turned to Huyette out of the bullpen to keep the deficit at two. The sophomore southpaw stranded runners in scoring position in both the fifth in sixth while allowing only one hit over his two and two-thirds innings of work to keep the Mustang lead within reach.
-Kmiec led off the top of the eighth with a walk and moved up to second on
Richard Fontanillas' infield single. After Delisle was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs, Esenwein delivered the big blow with a go-ahead, three-run single to put the Macs back ahead for the first time since the top of the first, 4-3.
-
Chris Szekeres reached on an error to bring in the fourth run of the inning, before
Zach Van Meter laid down a safety squeeze to score
Tom Prato from third to cap off the five-run frame.
-The Macs tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth thanks to a Prato run-scoring single to right-center before a Stevenson throwing error on a first and third play brought in the Macs' eighth run.
-Despite Stevenson bringing the tying run to the plate in the home half of the ninth,
Zach Smiley was able to induce a game-ending ground out to Kmiec at third to lock down the Macs' second consecutive win.
