ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Immaculata University baseball team clung to an early three-run lead Thursday at Elizabethtown, but seven unanswered Blue Jay runs ultimately downed the Macs on the road, 9-7.
Tyler Kmiec led IU with three hits on the day, including a double, and both Richard Fontanillas and
Chris Szekeres drove in a pair of runs.
Pat Devenney also logged a multi-hit day at the plate for Immaculata.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Macs opened the scoring in the top of the first, as
Justin Dempsey singled and later came around to score on
Brad Misialek's two-out, run scoring single to right.
-E-Town evened the score at one in the home half, but the Macs answered right away when
Cameron Delisle drew a leadoff walk and stole second before coming around to score on a
Pat Devenney double down the line in right.
-After a Blue Jay sac fly in the bottom of the second knotted the contest yet again, Richard Fontanillas belted a triple to left center to score a pair, including
Tyler Kmiec who had doubled to lead off the frame. Delisle followed with an RBI groundout to score Fontanillas with IU's third run of the inning, making it a 5-2 game.
-A four-run Elizabethtown fourth inning allowed the Blue Jays to regain the lead, before tacking on one in the fifth and two in the seventh to stretch their advantage to four.
-IU was held scoreless from the fourth through the eighth, but made things interesting in the top of the ninth with only three outs to play with. The Macs got two in scoring position with one out, and
Chris Szekeres took advantage by roping a two-run single to right center to cut the deficit to two. Devenney followed with a double to right center to get the tying run in scoring position with one out, but the Macs could not cash in, falling 9-7.
