IMMACULATA, Pa.- Locked in a tie game with 15 minutes remaining, the Mighty Macs (5-3) ripped off seven consecutive goals to close out the game and defeat Delaware Valley (4-3) on a cold day at Draper Walsh Stadium, 19-12.
Sophomore
Layne Kennedy had a huge game with seven goals while seniors
Hannah Verrecchia and
Rosemarie Reitman each scored four themselves.
Junior Lex Goerlach made her first start in goal and made 15 big stops to earn the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Kennedy opened the scoring, and following an Aggie goal three minutes later, the Macs scored twice more, one by Kennedy and another by senior
Olivia Carter to take a 3-1 lead
-The Aggies responded with three of their own to take a 4-3 lead with just under 20 minutes to go before halftime
-The Macs then ripped off three of the next four by Kennedy, Verrecchia, and Whaley to briefly take a 6-5 lead, but Del Val scored twice in the final seven minutes to give them a 7-6 lead at the break
-Junior Lex Goerlach made seven stops, including a couple of key saves, in the opening 30 minutes
-The Mighty Macs scored the first three of the second half from the same three who scored the final three of the first half to extend the 9-7 lead five minutes in
-Del Val would tie it, but Kennedy's fifth of the day put the Macs briefly back in front, 10-9
-The teams exchanged two goals each, both by Verrecchia before Del Val scored one to tie the game at 12-12 with 14:45 remaining in the game
-The Macs then went into overdrive, scoring the final seven goals of the game en route to the victory. Reitman saved all of her scoring for the final 13 minutes with four goals while Kennedy scored two and Whaley put the finishing touches on it with 22 seconds to go
TEAM COMPARISON
-The Macs outshot the Aggies, 47-31, and got 27 groundballs to 20 for Del Val
-Del Val turned it over 25 times and the Macs did so 20 times
