IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Immaculata University baseball team could not overcome a six-run first inning put together by visiting Marywood Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Pacers in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) midweek matchup, 6-3. Sophomore right-hander
Timmy Newell tossed seven and one-third shutout innings in relief for the Macs, limiting the Pacers to three hits and one walk while striking out six.
Freshman right fielder Richard Fontanillas had a two-hit day and drove in a run for Immaculata in the effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Tuesday's contest had the looks of a slugfest early on, as a 52-minute first inning produced a combined nine runs and seven hits. However, neither side was able to push across another run in the final eight innings.
-Marywood drew consecutive walks to start the top of the first and both came around to score on Jake Schuster's two-run triple to right center to open the scoring.
-Following the first out of the inning, Mitch Clemons brought in Schuster with a lined single to left to make it a 3-0 game. A single to right then placed runners on the corners with two away, but a wild pitch brought home the fourth run of the inning. Before the Macs were able to escape the lengthy top of the first, a Marywood single through the right side plated two more, extending the lead to six.
-Right-hander
Timmy Newell was summoned out of the bullpen to get the last out of the inning and did so by picking off the runner to end the frame.
-Immaculata battled back in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally to cut the early deficit in half.
Justin Dempsey reached on an infield error and moved up to second on a
Brad Misialek base knock. After
Cameron Delisle came aboard to load the bases, Richard Fontanillas lined a comebacker off the pitcher's leg and into left field, scoring Dempsey with IU's first run.
-
Chris Szekeres followed with a single right back through the middle and into center to score Misialek and Delisle with the second and third runs of the inning.
-Newell was able to silence Marywood's bats rather quickly out of the bullpen, retiring 11-of-12 in the middle of his outing en route to seven and one-third shutout innings while striking out six. After surrendering a dribbler up the third base line for an infield to hit to lead off the top of the fourth, Newell held the Pacers hitless from that point up until two outs in the seventh.
-The Macs struggled to get anything going after the first inning against Marywood starter Joey Castellani who went the distance for the Pacers for the complete-game win. Fontanillas led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line, but was left stranded there after three consecutive infield pop outs.
