FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Immaculata University baseball team extended its win streak to three - and evened its record in Fort Pierce, Fla. on the week - with a doubleheader sweep of Hilbert College (2-8) Friday by finals of 17-3 and 6-5. The Macs put up plenty run support for
Billy Manzo in game one, who tossed five innings and struck out eight en route to his first win, before
Justin Dempsey provided the walk-off win in game two to complete the sweep over the Hawks.
Tristan Ryan was 5-for-6 in the doubleheader and scored four runs, including a leadoff triple in the seventh inning where he eventually came across to score the winning run.
Tyler Kmiec was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in game one to lead the IU offense.
GAME 1
IMMACULATA 17, HILBERT 3
WP: Manzo (1-0)
LP: Evan Kaul (0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Hilbert put three on the board in the bottom of the first to gain an early advantage, as all three runs were scored with two outs in the frame.
-The Macs were quick to answer in the top of the second, striking for four runs to take the lead. After a passed ball allowed the first run to score, Dempsey brought in another by reaching on an error before Kmiec delivered the big blow, a two-run, two-out single to left center to make it a 4-3 game.
-Manzo settled in to pick up a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless bottom of the second, and the Macs continued to pour on run support in the top of the third. Richard Fontanillas singled to open the frame and advanced to third before
Stephen Trendler picked up a knock to left to drive him in. Following a walk to
Brad Misialek and a pair of double steals, Greyson Avots and Dempsey lifted consecutive sacrifice flies to make it a four-run lead.
-The Macs put the game out of reach with a six-spot in the fourth on eight hits, headlined by run-scoring singles from
Pat Devenney, Misialek, Kmiec and Ryan. Trendler also added a sac fly to score
Greg Grandelli after he doubled as the second batter of the inning.
-IU added four more in the fifth to extend the lead to 14, as
Cameron Delisle and
Vinny Carlesi each drove in a run in their pinch-hit opportunities, while Manzo was on cruise control after allowing three in the first to pick up the win.
GAME 2
HILBERT 5, IMMACULATA 6
WP:
Zach Smiley (1-3)
LP: Goodberry (0-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hawks were first on the board again in game two, after a pair of singles resulted in a lone run on an RBI ground out off freshman Nick DeSantis making his first collegiate start on the mound.
-The Macs were quick to pick up the freshman, tallying two runs in the bottom half after Ryan lined a leadoff single and moved up to third on a Dempsey base knock. With Kmiec at the plate with no outs, IU perfected a first and third play as Dempsey stayed in the rundown long enough for Ryan to swipe home, knotting the game at one. Kmiec walked in his at-bat and came around to score on a wild pitch for the Macs' second run.
-DeSantis settled in nicely on the mound, limiting the Hawks to just two hits over the next three innings as he left the game in line for the win, but ultimately settled for a no-decision.
-In the bottom of the third, IU pushed across two more to extend the lead to three. With two in scoring position and no outs, Devenny scored on a wild pitch and Kmiec reached on an RBI fielder's choice.
-After a scoreless fourth from both sides, the Hawks' bats came alive to even the contest at four in the fifth, the big blow coming on a two-run Samuels double.
-In the bottom of the sixth, IU put the pressure on when Delisle led off with a walk and moved up to second on
Chris Szekeres' sac bunt. Delisle then moved up to third on a wild pitch, and a double steal in a first and third situation brought in the speedy outfielder with the go-ahead run.
-Down to their last out, the Hawks got the tying run to third and the go-ahead run to second as the Macs aimed to close it out. However, a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score, evening the game at five.
-The Macs wasted no time in the final frame before extra innings, as Ryan belted a leadoff triple into the left-center gap on the first pitch he saw against the Hilbert reliever, before
Justin Dempsey lined a walk-off single to left to score Ryan, completing the doubleheader sweep.
