IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's Athletic Department held its annual end-of-the-year athletic banquet on Sunday afternoon inside Alumnae Hall to honor its 49 senior student-athletes as well as those student-athletes who received all-conference, all-academic and weekly awards during 2013-14.
Highlighting the banquet festivities were the presentations of the most outstanding male and female senior athlete and the most outstanding male and female senior scholar-athlete awards.
Meagan Fitzgerald was named Immaculata's most outstanding female senior athlete, while
Anna Gilbert was selected as the most outstanding female senior scholar-athlete.
T.J. Jappah was the recipient of Immaculata's most outstanding male senior athlete, and
John Pedorenko was the most outstanding male senior scholar-athlete.
Fitzgerald is a captain and four-year starter on the softball team who has helped the team qualify for the CSAC Tournament during all four seasons. Fitzgerald was recognized as a 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-East Region Third Team selection. She was named the 2013 CSAC Pitcher of the Year, and was a 2013 and 2012 First Team All-CSAC honoree. She has appeared in 75 games in the circle and started 71 during her career with a 2.59 earned run average and a record of 42-24 along with three saves. She has tossed 57 complete games, including 12 shutouts. She has 370 career strikeouts while holding opponents to just a .239 batting average. The Saylorsburg, Pa., native has a career .317 batting average on 26 hits in 82 plate appearances, including eight doubles, 18 RBIs and has scored 13 runs.
Academically, Fitzgerald was named to the 2013 CoSIDA/Captial One Academic All-District 4 First Team, and was a 2012
Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Softball Team selection. She has been named a 2013, 2012 and 2011 NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete along with being a three-time CSAC Spring All-Academic Team selection.
Gilbert is a two-sport athlete at Immaculata in field hockey and track & field, who maintained a 3.93 grade-point average while majoring in Fashion Merchandising. She is a member of the Immaculata University Undergraduate Honor Society. She is also part of Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society, Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society Kappa Gamma Pi. She earned the Dean's Scholarship from 2010-14, and has made the Dean's List for six of seven semesters. Gilbert has participated in the Fashion Group since her freshman year and currently serves as the organization's Treasurer. Gilbert is involved in the following organizations on campus including Student Athletic Advisory Committee for two years and was part of the Outsiders Club her freshman and sophomore years.
Gilbert has been active in community service singing as part of the Christmas caroling group at Cross Keys Nursing Home, participating in several Light the Night Walks to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, making dresses for children in Haiti and assisting in making wheelchair bags for the elderly. Gilbert completed two internships as part of her major at New Holland Apparel in the summer of 2013 and at the Carolina Apparel Group over Christmas break of 2012.
The York Springs, Pa., native has excelled on the field and track as well earning 2013 Second Team All-CSAC and 2012 Honorable Mention All-CSAC recognition in field hockey. She is a four-year member of the field hockey team, helping the squad reach the CSAC playoffs during three of her four seasons. She played in 74 career games for the Mighty Macs and started 71, making 12 defensive saves. She has competed on the indoor and outdoor track and field team the last three seasons, running the 800-meters and mile during the indoor season, and participating in the 800m and 1,500m during the outdoor season. She has been a four-time CSAC Fall All-Academic Team member, named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 2013, 2012 and 2011, and was selected as a 2013 and 2012 NFHCA Scholar of Distinction.
Jappah, who is also a two-sport athlete in men's soccer and indoor and outdoor track & field, was honored each season by the CSAC men's soccer coaches for his play in the pitch. He was selected to the 2012 and 2011 All-CSAC First Team and was named Honorable Mention All-CSAC in 2013 and 2010. He played in 66 career soccer games, scoring six goals and four assists for 16 points, which helped Immaculata qualify for the CSAC Quarterfinals in 2012. He was named to the Garnet Alumni Classic All-Tournament Team during the 2010 season. He was honored with the CSAC Sportsmanship Award in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Jappah is a three-year member of track & field team and a two-year captain on the team. He was one of the Mighty Macs' top performers during the 2012-13 indoor season, leading the team in both the 55-meters and 200m, and the Coatesville, Pa., native holds numerous Top 10 spots in the 60-meters, 200m, 4x100m and long jump.
Pedorenko has spent four seasons with the baseball team as a pitcher and was part of the team that reached the CSAC Tournament during the 2011 season. He has been selected three times to the CSAC All-Academic Team.
The Collegeville, Pa., native has shown excellence in the classroom with a 3.93 GPA as an Accounting and Finance major. He is a member of the Immaculata University Honor Society and Delta Mu Delta Business Honor Society, which he serves as President.
He is also the President of the Student Advisory Board for the Business Department and a member of Enactus. Pedorenko has participated in the Good Samaritan Food Closet community service project. He has also interned at SEI Investments as well as 2 Sports Incorporated.
During his career, he has pitched in 34 games earning three starts, posting a 5.51 ERA and a 4-1 record with 21 career strikeouts. He has the lowest ERA (2.35) and second-most wins (3-0) on the team this season.
Others honored on Sunday were Immaculata's All-CSAC selections, CSAC weekly award winners, Mighty Mac of the Week honorees, the CSAC Sportsmanship Award winners and the all-academic team members. In all, Immaculata celebrated the achievements of all its student-athletes during the past year for their play on the field/court and in the classroom.
